Summer may be hot and humid, but that’s no reason to give up dressing well. It may be a little trickier than putting together an outfit in the fall or winter – less pieces to work with – but the simplicity of putting on a floaty dress or a light cardigan is part of the beauty. And the good part is, there are key trends this summer, some left over from spring, to help guide your look to style perfection. The number one piece to have for the summer is the “little white dress”. Yes, put your little black dresses aside for now. White dresses – in cool fabrics such as cotton or linen – have been showing up everywhere since Philip Lim’s first collection.
He has since been credited with starting – or, as some see it, reintroducing – the summer staple. Whether it’s white-on-white patterned, decorated with flowers or rosettes, or plain, the LWD will take you from a casual day to a fancy night.
During the day, wear the dress over a tank top or a slip, if need be. At night, if there’s a breeze, add a light cardigan. A shrug is also a variation instead of a cardigan. Unfortunately, a poncho screams a few years ago, but perhaps they’ll come around again. Keep it in your closet for now.
Sunny weather also calls for a pair of sunglasses! Although designers make great-looking pairs, there are plenty of inexpensive pairs that are very flattering. Take the time to try on each pair, noting what type of glasses look best on your face shape. Also pay attention to how dark you prefer the lenses and whether you like the shades to wrap far around the side of your face. There are many options for affordable sunglasses
Another popular summer trend is metallics. There’s a lot of room for personal expression here because metallics have been shown in so many different ways. To make a bold statement, a metallic piece of clothing can be striking. A shiny tank top, paired with jeans or dark pants – is fun and glam.
For a more subtle approach, try metallic accessories. Purses (especially clutches) and jewelry are good ways to add metallic to an outfit. Layering many thin necklaces seems to have gone out of style for now, giving way to chunkier, more substantial pieces of jewelry. Heavy necklaces and bracelets, are what’s hot right now. If you’re iffy on making a jewelry commitment, browse cheaper stores for fun pieces. Teen stores often have racks of jewelry that’s meant to last a season or two. You’re your eye out for pendant necklaces, often with rhinestones, or charm bracelets.
Metallic flats are adorable and they never go out of style. Numerous brands make simple flats, but they can definitely always be found at London Sole. Keep your clothes non-shiny and play up your face. Metallic makeup can be pretty, not flashy, if it’s done right. Eye shadow with silver or gold tones look best when they catch the light but are not too frosty. If you’re unsure what shades look best, ask someone at a makeup store or counter for help or color suggestions based on your skin tone and features.
Espadrilles, the ubiquitous summer shoe, have come back with a roar (or a stampede) this year. Every designer seems to have their own version. Tall, short, natural colored, candy colored, the possibilities are unique and endless.
One of the most “controversial” trend items for summer is the clear bag. Some find it fresh and innovative, while others find it tacky. (Tim Gunn nixed a clear tote in a recent issue of Glamour.) Obviously, if you use a clear tote, you’ll have to put the rest of your items in smaller clutches or bags inside. You’ll have to make your own decision on this one, but here’s a suggestion: find a tote that’s clear but has a fabric lining – some are even reversible. I had one back in high school; the fabric was blue-and-white 1950s surfer/Hawaiian print on one side, plain blue denim on the other. It had a clear look without being see-through.
If these trends sound appealing, hurry and start wearing them now… fall fashion is just around the corner!

Crisp, white clothing looks fresh and youthful–just what you want for a spring look! But can your post-winter complexion stand up to this bright color or will your skin end up looking dull and listless? When I get the opportunity to make over a client who loves wearing spring whites, I focus on the skin first. Once the skin looks fresh and dewy, I can focus on applying flattering color. If you’re looking for makeup tips to use with spring whites, I’ve got a few that might help!
Getting dewy-looking skin is easy! The face should be freshly scrubbed and exfoliated, if needed. Pat the skin dry and apply a daytime moisturizer. While the skin is still moist from the moisturizer, apply liquid foundation to your face using your fingers or a fresh, damp sponge. (This is the secret to youthful-looking skin!) You should also apply foundation to your eyelids.
Dab concealer (one shade lighter than your foundation) around the eyes. I usually dab the concealer under the eye, at the inner and outer corners and above the eyebrows. This puts the emphasis on your eyes and instantly brightens your face.
Rub an apricot, rose or peach cream blush on your cheek apples. You should use cream blush because it looks natural and flattering with this makeup style.
Wear light or brown eyeliner, not black or bright colors, above and below your lashes. I love the white colors too but for spring whites, more natural tones are best. Touch your lashes with brown or black mascara-one coat should do.
Line the lips with neutral lip liner. If you have smallish lips, outline just outside of the natural lip line. Dab tinted lip gloss on your lips.
I find this dewy look perfect for that flirty white dress or pant suit. You may have to tweak some of the color suggestions but this should work for you too!
