Buying a Maxi Dress

I was looking through the sale ads from the Sunday paper and noticed that maxi dresses were back in style. Macy’s, Penny’s, Target, they all had ads promoting the sale of maxi dresses. These ads brought back memories of my first maxi dress. This is telling my age, but I was in sixth grade in 1969 and maxi dresses were the ‘in thing’. I remember it well; because the year before the miniskirt was the ‘in thing’ and the maxi dress was a drastic change from those.

My first maxi dress was the classic late 60’s, early 70’s peasant style with no sleeves, elastic waist and huge ruffle at the bottom, and I was the envy of all my girl friends. I remember thinking that maxi dress was one of the most comfortable, stylish dresses I had ever worn and wondered how I would look in one today. Sure, back then I only weighed about 85 pounds, compared to my 140 pounds today, but surely having more weight would benefit the look, as the dress could help hide the bulgy places that come with middle age.

I thought about the design of the maxi dress and realized there were some things a woman needs to look at before deciding to purchase one of these bohemian frocks. A maxi dress with the wrong cut or print could make you look as if you are wearing a bathrobe.

When shopping for a maxi dress, look for necklines that are not too low, especially if you are big-busted. You will want the waist to be defined whether it be an empire, gathered, or belted one. Check the length of the maxi dress. You do not want it to be so long that you are stepping on it.

Maxi dresses come in a variety of colors and prints, and it may be hard to decide which one is right for you. Keep in mind that large, busy bold prints can appear blurry to the eye, mainly because of the amount of fabric that is used in the dress. A solid color may be a better choice.

A solid color maxi dress is easier to accessorize with long necklaces, flowing scarves and trendy purses.

As for shoes, sandals go great with a maxi dress, especially those Roman sandals, or try a pair of flats or one-inch heels.

I am still a little nervous about buying a maxi dress, so I will start off with a solid color one that I can wear to less casual events, such as a garden party or cook out. If I decide it is just not for me, I will cut off the bottom to knee length and make a sundress out of it.
